Can Blue Light be used for teeth bleaching with teeth whitening gel?

I wrote this article some time ago.  Now I find new information on blue light teeth whitening.  There’s a new ionic teeth whitening system that can professionally whiten your teeth in 5 days using blue light therapy.  The device is called the Pearl and is manufactured by Syneron Medical Ltd.   The device is marketed by Syneron Beauty under the name of Tanda Pearl.

I have sensitive teeth and have been afraid of using a teeth whitening gel to whiten my teeth. I am adverse to pain. A dentist office offers the cosmetic service of placing a peroxide-based bleaching gel on the teeth . As long as the gel stays in constant contact with the surface of the teeth a degree of whitening occurs depending on the strength of the peroxide gel. To achieve the desired effect a number of daily treatments are needed either in a dental office or at the patient’s home. Making the bleach concentration stronger would cause a non-desireable result especially for someone with sensitive teeth. The lightening would occur but with a very painful experience.

The Journal of American Dental Association published an article about a study conducted on the interaction of bleaching and accelerator light for a faster teeth whitening result. It was found that the application of high wave blue light provided the safest risk from tooth damage.

Another study showed the best wavelength of light to use was in the medium wave blue light spectrum. Recent research shows that if you incorporate a medium to low peroxide gel with a blue light accelerator a greater whiteness level will be achieved.

Can this be achieved at home, or will it need to be a dental office experience?

Peroxide gel for teeth whitening can be purchased in different strengths. You can also purchase a blue light at the proper wavelength. The blue light needs to be large enough to cover the mouth area. Take a look at the peroxide gel that is sold on Amazon.

The Baby Blue Quasar has a blue light lower wavelength, the Trophy Skin Blue MD has a medium blue light wavelength, and the Tanda Professional has a lower blue light wavelength. The studies for blue light for teeth whitening found that a cool LED blue light in the visible spectrum with a wavelength of 490-520 nanometers, is a perfect combination to get teeth whitened very fast without sensitivity. It appears that you would need to buy a kit containing the correct blue light with the best peroxide strength for optimum results.
